James J. Peters VA Medical Center Selected as Priority Site for Newest and First Fisher House Construction in New York City

Bronx, NY – The Secretary of Veterans Affairs selected the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (JJP), located in Bronx, NY, as a priority site for the construction of two 16-suite Fisher Houses. The groundbreaking ceremony of the new Fisher House project will take place on May 25, 2017 at 1:00pm, on the medical center grounds, across from the community living center courtyard.

The Fisher House program provides a "home away from home" for families and caregivers of Veterans and Active Duty Service members receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes provide free temporary accommodations so families can be close to their loved ones during a medical crisis. Having your family by your side supports positive clinical outcomes and allows loved ones to heal together.

“We appreciate and are truly grateful to Fisher House for this momentous milestone,” said Dr. Erik Langhoff, James J. Peters VA Medical Center director. “This will be the first Fisher House in the New York City area and will be a great addition to the services we provide for our Veterans, their immediate family members, and caregivers. It will be especially beneficial to our Veterans with extended inpatient stays. This is huge positive for our medical center and the Veterans we serve.”

Fisher House Foundation and the James J. Peters VA Medical Center recognize that caring for the immediate family and caregivers of a Veteran or Active Duty Service member is an essential component contributing to the health and recovery of our Veterans. Fisher Houses provide convenient accommodations, at no cost, while a Veteran is receiving care at the medical center.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be a part of this,” said Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. “I was born and raised in the Bronx, so it’s like coming home. I want our Veterans and their families to know when they walk in the door of a Fisher House that America cares and we thank them for their service.”

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is one of 14 VA facilities recently selected to receive a Fisher House to help care for our Veterans, their family members and caregivers. Fisher House Foundation constructs Fisher Houses on the campus, or within walking distance, of the VA Medical center or military installation. Currently, there are 71 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 29 VA medical centers. Many more houses are in various stages of construction planning across the country.
