On Tuesday, December 10, the James J. Peters Medical Center Director named long-time VA employee, Elmar Leibfried, the newest Pharmacy Chief, effective December 1, 2013. Our hearty congratulations to Mr. Leibfried, and much success in this new position!

Elmar Leibfried earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University, and a Master in Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University. His pharmacy career began at the Veterans Administration as a graduate pharmacist at the VA New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange, NJ, in 1989. As a licensed pharmacist, Elmar’s practice in East Orange included outpatient pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, and lead IV room pharmacist, including preparation of chemotherapy and investigational drugs. In 2002, Elmar joined the team at the James J. Peters Veteran Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, as Inpatient Supervisory Pharmacist, and then as Pharmacist/Program Specialist in 2004, where he has managed the inpatient pharmacy department and procurement. Throughout his career at the VA, Elmar spear-headed many projects and implemented numerous programs that have improved patient outcomes, promoted the roles of the pharmacist, empowered pharmacy technicians, and reduced costs. Elmar earned certificates from the Bronx VA Leadership Program and the East Orange VA Expanding Horizons Program, and is involved in the education of future professionals through the VA pharmacy residency programs and colleges of pharmacy experiential programs.
